Troubleshooting Steps for Receipt Printers/Cash Drawers

The following are the steps to take in diagnosing printer trouble:

  1. Check if the printer is powered on

  2. Check if the printer has paper

  3. Check all the connections on the back of the printer
    1. Check the Power Cord 
      1. Check if power is connect to the power source
      2. Check if the power cable is connected to the power pack securely
      3. Check if the power cord is connected securely to the back of the printer
    2. Check the Data Cable - LPT1 or USB Cable
      1. Check if the data cable is connected securely to the computer
      2. Check if the data cable is connected securely to the printer
    3. Check the Cash Drawer Cable

  4. Check if your printer is online not offline
    1. Go into Control Panel
    2. Printer and Faxes
    3. Right click your printer make sure it's not set to "Use Printer Offline"

  5. Check the printer pending documents and clear it
    1. Go into Control Panel
    2. Printer and Faxes
    3. Right click your printer and select open, select the printer tab and select "Cancel All Documents"

  6. You need to identify if the printer is compatible or not.The compatible printers have to be LPT1 Star TSP600 or Star TSP650. If not do the following:

      • Go into your printer properties
      • Find your cash drawer settings
      • Select either document top or document bottom
        • Document top is when the cash drawer opens when the receipts starts to print.
        • Document bottom is when the cash drawer opens until the receipt is done printing.

  7. Check the printer properties and see if the drivers are installed correctly
    1. Go into control panel
    2. Printer and faxes
    3. Right click your printer and select properties, select ports tab and select which ever port applies to your printer

  8. Check your POS application make sure its pointed to the proper interface (USB or LPT1)
    1. Log into your POS
    2. In the configuration page select the Hardware tab
    3. Under printer setting select which ever port applies to your printer 

 

*If you have any printer error it will cause your cash drawer not to open.

*To quickly check if your printer is working - turn off your printer and hold feed key and turn it back on without letting go of the feed key.
